Seat Belt for Forklifts

Forklift Seat Belts - This guideline purpose is to be able to describe the Regulation requirements for the utilization of operator seatbelts or restraints on forklifts. It is the employers' responsibility to be able to ensure that each machinery, piece of equipment and tool within the workplace is chosen and utilized correctly and worked in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

Rough Terrain forklifts must meet the regulations of ANSI Standard ASME B56.6-1992 with regards to their fabrication, use, design, maintenance and inspection.

Mobile machinery like side boom tractors together with a Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS), must include seat belts that meet the Society of Automotive Engineers safety requirements; Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J386 JUN93, Operator Restraint System for Off-Road Work Machines. If whichever mobile equipment includes seat belts required by law, the operator and subsequent passengers should make certain they utilize the belts whenever the vehicle is in motion or engaged in operation for the reason that this can cause the equipment to become unstable and thus, not safe.

The seat belt requirements while working a lift truck depend on various factors. Whether or not the lift truck is equipped along with a Rollover Protective Structure, the kind of lift truck itself and the year the forklift was manufactured all contribute to this determination. The manufacturer's instructions and the requirements of the applicable standard are referenced in the Regulation.

Referring to an operator restraint device, enclosure or system, ANSI Standard ASME B56.1-1993 in the case of powered industrial trucks, is intended to assist the operator in reducing the risk of entrapment of the head and/or torso between the truck and the ground in the event of a tip over. The restraint device or system can include a seat belt, even though a seat belt is not necessarily a part of such machine or system.
